Thank you for your presence and participation in the first part of our presentation on “Conspiracy Theories and Hate Speech in the Days of the Coronavirus”. Join us for the second part next week and ask your questions.
The health crisis surrounding the coronavirus, which generates anxiety, is also illustrated by the proliferation of hate speech and certain conspiracy theories that propagate a racist and xenophobic interpretation of the virus. Whether it is content deliberately disseminated by extremist groups or simple ordinary comments exchanged by certain individuals on social networks, the current context points to disinformation that is dangerous for living-together. In these presentations (two parts), we will address the theme of hate speech and conspiracy theories in the context of the health crisis, as well as the illustration of hateful, racist and xenophobic comments circulating in Quebec in connection with the current crisis. Finally, we will discuss the courses of action and preventive behaviours that everyone can take to prevent the proliferation of speech that is not only false, but also has harmful consequences for many of our fellow citizens.
