WITNESSES

What should I do if I witness a hate crime or incident?

Experiencing violent acts or discriminatory behaviours can affect the emotional wellbeing, self-esteem and identity formation of both victims and other members of the same community.
If you think you have witnessed a hate crime or incident, it is very important that you report it. Not only will you help ensure the well-being of the victim, the victim’s loved ones and yourself, but you will be actively combatting acts of hate. By communicating with the appropriate individuals:
• you are taking a stand against acts or behaviours of a criminal or non-criminal nature that jeopardize social togetherness;
• you are helping put an end to the cycle of violence and protect other potential victims of hate crimes and incidents;
• you are assisting the CPRLV and its partners in developing a better understanding of the magnitude of the phenomenon so they can take the necessary measures to ensure prevention, and victim and witness support.
